Alright, if you’re a consumer and you’re considering picking up the new Xbox One console, then please, take a moment to listen to me. Before we begin, no, I am not a fanboy or a hater. I have no console Bias. I have a PS3, Xbox 360, Wii, and a Gaming PC. Each has their pros and cons but now onto business.DO NOT BUY AN XBOX ONE. Why? No longer possible. Every Xbox One game you get must be registered to your Xbox live account to be played. After that point it will only work for you. No one else can use it unless they pay a fee. Essentially it works like this. You pick up a used Xbox One game from somewhere or someone, pop it into your console. The system verifies it’s been registered to your account. Uh-oh, it isn’t! In order to play it, you have to pay Microsoft a fee, which is currently slated to be full retail price. Doesn’t matter how scratched up it is or how cheap you got it at gamestop or from a friend. The option is there for Developers to require the Xbox to always be online to play their particular game. Well, it seems PC gamers and console gamers have one thing in common now… DRM.(At least pirates on PC can bypass DRM easily. (Originally posted on Facebook by one of my friends. He brings up many valid points. Mind you, I haven’t been a fan of Xbox in a long time and I will most likely get a PS4. But this confirms further for me that I won’t be getting an Xbox one any time in the foreseeable future.)
(before I begin, I’m buying a Wii U and we’re not planning on getting a PS4 or a Xbox One)
Here’s the thing. A lot of this is unconfirmed, speculation, and possibilities. NOTHING is set in stone. Of course Microsoft is being secretive, try to remember that they don’t want to give everything away right now, especially with the PS4 also in development. I’ve checked the sources and here’s what I’ve found.
1. Connecting every 24 hours: Unconfirmed. There’s a lot that can change between now and the actual release. “While Phil [Harrison] discussed many potential scenarios around games on Xbox One, today we have only confirmed that we designed Xbox One to enable our customers to trade in and resell games at retail,” a Microsoft rep said. “There have been reports of a specific time period — those were discussions of potential scenarios, but we have not confirmed any details today, nor will we be.” That’s a scenario, that you would have to connect every 24 hours. Not confirmed.
2. What? No borrowing games? Mostly unconfirmed. As per Microsoft’s Major Nelson, there’s a slight bit of good news here. You can bring a game over to your friend’s house and play on their console for free if you log in with your user account. If they want to borrow it and play on their own, however, they’ll need to pay the fee. That helps. A possibility is that Harrison let something slip, and now Microsoft has to play damage control because nothing is confirmed yet and they don’t want everyone to panic over something that might not be true by tomorrow.
3. Indie Devs: As it currently stands, indie devs must get a publishing deal with either Microsoft Games Studios or a third-party publisher to get their games on XBLA. The exception to this is titles that opt to release on Xbox Live Indie Games, though this has more financial drawbacks for developers than the more lucrative Arcade section. Quality control everyone, that’s all that it is. So, you have the option to publish on XLIG, and self promote OR you can get a deal with Microsoft or another publisher and get on the arcade. They take a small cut, and you get your game promoted as well.
4. As it stands, you will need a device with an HDMI output. Depending on what that means, you might have one already. Cable companies are dying as it is, it might not be the end of the world to be able to drop Comcast and use your XBox for TV and gaming. As for price, I don’t see anything confirmed.
5. Always Kinected: Yes, the Kinect needs to be able to connect to the XBox One to function. But at this point I think they’re going to try to integrate the Kinect into more games, so playing without the Kinect would be like playing without a controller. And they’re including it with the system, as well as improving it so that it will work in smaller areas. “Kinect does require to be connected to Xbox One in all cases, yes,” he said. Asked whether the Xbox One will accommodate people who perhaps play in their bedroom rather than their living room, Eagle replied: “Yes, absolutely. We use the living room almost as a moniker - that’s where we assume the best screen is in the house. But if you like to play in any other room in the house, the Xbox One will deliver the same quality of experience whatever the environment.”
6. Always listening: Listening doesn’t mean recording. Yeah, I think it’s creepy too. It would be easy enough for someone to hack in if they wanted to, and I’m sure someone will. I would prefer for this to be an optional feature. They are hinting that it could be disabled, because the system is in a low power state. So hey, unplug it and you’re fine if you’re too paranoid. As for privacy - We aren’t using Kinect to snoop on anybody at all. We listen for the word ‘Xbox on’ and then switch on the machine, but we don’t transmit personal data in any way, shape or form that could be personally identifiable to you, unless you explicitly opt into that.
7. I don’t think Microsoft is going to shut down your Harry Potter movie marathon unless you’re doing it with 50 other people. Nothing is really confirmed here, just that they’re looking into it.
8. They’ve confirmed that they will charge a fee, but no set amount has been confirmed. The company is yet to confirm whether players will be able to play games from disc or run them on secondary accounts without paying for the installation, nor has it given any indication of what the fee may be.
9. New accessories… Again. Yes, you will need to buy a new headset. But that’s because the current generation of headsets and accessories don’t meet the system requirements to give you the full experience the system is capable of. Keep in mind they are considering adapters for your current headsets.
10. Backwards compatibility: It’s not a question of Microsoft being greedy, Games designed for the Xbox 360’s Xenon processor simply won’t run natively on the new hardware, since the Xenon used a PowerPC architecture instead. Of course, Sony’s PlayStation 4 has the same problem: Sony also chose to move to x86 from PowerPC, and the PS4 also won’t directly support PS3 games. Sad, but it just won’t run games from old hardware. Keep your 360 around, I think we’ll be buying one once the XBO comes out.
